Ciera's Rainbow Cake...

Here is Ciera's 1st Birthday Cake.
Had to pre-make all the small decorations before hand.

Fun to make. Would love to have it bit more smoother, but I think happy with how it turned out, considering having work next day.

Cake Class - Thursday 3rd September 2009 Fathers Day Veggies!

Today's class we did a basket filled with veggies on a plaque for father's day.

Quite fun and easy to do.

Cauliflower we used a small strainer and the rest are just round balls with few knife marks to create an effect.

The little leaves on top of the eggplants, tomatoes we used a small (extremely) tiny star cutter.

I will put this on a cake and give it to my dad for his birthday instead of father's day.. =)

Noah's Ark Cake

Here are pics of the finished Noah's Ark Cake we did during class.

The Ark is made of a Circle (20cm) Cake and a Square (20cm) cake.

We carved the the Circle cake by cutting the ends diagonally to make the ark shape.

Then we cut the Square into 4 equal portions and cut one portion into two triangles to form the roof of the ark.

Debbie Brown's Book is really good, it shows step by step.

Problems: I didn't put toothpicks for my animals so I just buttercream them on the ark making it not secure. Next time I will put toothpicks so they can stay on the ark.

My teacher said that this cake costs about $300 in the shops.
Anyways... till next time!

Cake Class - Thursday August 20th 2009

We finished making these flowers yesterday. I liked how the orchird turned out.
The colours came out really well. It has the wrong colour bud though.

The other flowers are those flowers you see on weddings and funerals.

These are some of the animals we will be putting on our Noah's Ark cake!
I'm so excited about it. I still have to make a whole lot of more animals to fill up the ark.
Panda's, Snakes, Elephants!!

The Noah's Ark cake we will be doing is from Debbie Brown's book - 50 Easy Party Cakes

Kath's Shoe Box Cake!

Here it is! Finished!

Had so much problems.

Firstly I couldn't cut the dowels! And I got the measurements all wrong.
Then I wasn't sure about my design so moving things around, which is why there is icing and white bits on the cake!
Doesn't look too neat!

The tissue paper is too thick! Needs to be thinner. It doesn't look real!

And my edges on the cake aren't smooth as I would've liked.
Was my first time doing sharp edge cake!

Anyways, everything is edible except for the lid.

The lid is made of polystyrene and is held up with a dowel.

Thanks to mrsmudrash from Cake Central for the inspiration and the tips!

The Suckling Pig Cake - Completed

The finished Suckling Pig cake!

It turned out OK, had a few problems!

Firstly, the box I bought was too small so I had to squeeze it in and the cake board cover kind of came of, which is why there is that ribbon to cover all my imperfections!

And I probably wouldn't have put the 'lolo and lola' there on the cake looks untidy. It was too late to remove because the red stained the white icing.

Anyways, here it is.. Hope they like it!

Suckling Pig Cake!

My in law's birthday on Sunday and my husband suggested I make them a cake with a suckling pig on it or a 'lechon' cake!

I found a few pis on the net and I just decided to do a pig with few apples.

Here is the cake topper that will be on the cake.

My next blog entry will hopefully have the pic of the final cake!

Sorry about the pic, it was taken from my phone.

Cake Decorating Class Thursday 23rd July - Cupcakes!

Yesterday's class was all about decorating cupcakes. We made some baby cupcake toppers, a bib, booties and a rattle. We also covered the entire cupcake and made it into an elephant. My elephant is quite rushed because we were running out of time. We also learnt how to make different colours of the buttercream other than plain white. I thought that was quite cool, you can see it in the cupcakes below. How it's not just one colour.

Above: Baby cupcake toppers

Above: An Elephant, although I think it looks like a mouse. Need to get the ears right.

Not so Transformers!

I made a transformers cake. It just didn't turn out as smoothly and neatly as I hoped.

It was the first time for me to cover the cake board and I shouldn't have done that! Simply, because the cake didn't fit. and when I tried to fit the cake on the cake board I got it all dirty with chocolate and corn flour!!

So disappointed about how it turned out. I had high hopes.

Here are the pics anyways.

Beginning with my original design of how the cake should look:

The transformers pic I used to make the cake topper.

The cake board which I covered. I shouldn't have put the 'Happy Birthday Ron'
on it as I didn't estimate the size of the cake! Never again! Well we all learn from our mistakes

Welcome!

I decided to create this blog, to share my journey into the world of Cake decorating!

I started cake decorating a few months ago and have found it an enjoyable hobby that I wish to continue! I didn't realize how easy it is to learn and how incredibly satisfying it is when finishing a cake.. to hear the comments is definitely rewarding.

My cake teacher's name is Irene and I do cake decorating at Homestead, Roxburgh Park every Thursday nights.

I wish I had started this earlier to explain more about my earlier cakes. However, it's never too late.

Below is a snapshot of all the cakes and cupcakes I've created so far.

Above Image: Clown Cake for my daughter's 2nd Birthday (Clown was made using bas relief technique)

Above Image: Chloe's Half cake for her 6 months birthday.

Above: Elmo Cake - My first shaped cake! So Difficult - I didn't estimate enough RTR icing I had to fill cracks.
